About Polar
The first EKG accurate wireless heart rate monitor was invented by Polar back in 1977 as a training tool for the Finnish National Cross Country Ski Team. The concept of "intensity training" by heart rate swept the athletic world in the eighties. By the 1990s, individuals were looking to heart rate monitors not only for performance training needs, but also for achieving everyday fitness goals. Today, the same concept of heart rate training is being used by world-class athletes as well as everyday people trying to lose weight. Polar is the leading brand among consumers, coaches, and personal trainers worldwide and the company is committed to not only producing the best products, but also being the leading educator on the benefits of heart rate based exercise.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money on this   February 8, 2008

I got one of the Polar FS1 heart rate monitors through my employer's health center. I think it is a complete piece of junk. The strap is very difficult to fasten around your wrist. The chest band is almost impossible to get it to stay on. You attach one side and the other falls off. You go fix that side, and the first falls off. And the reading seems to be wildly inaccurate, telling me I'm at 180 when I am barely breathing hard, while my treadmill tells me I'm at 140. In addition, with no backlight the display is difficult to read. The one button control is extremely inconvenient. Basically, this is a complete waste of money. I'll be donating it to the thrift store. What a waste of money.

4 out of 5 stars Not Bad for the Price   February 1, 2008

I have been biking for awhile now and I recently got an indoor trainer and some DVD's to use to keep in shape over the winter months. So after doing them a few times I realized that I would be much better off if I knew my heart rate so I could train correctly for hard/easy days.

The first few times I used it I had problems because I was not wearing it quite tight enough because after I tightened it up it has worked perfectly. I have had it all the way from 70 to 194 bpm and it seems to react as I would expect for various levels of excursion.

My biggest complaint is that it doesn't keep track of the max heart rate for a training session, the more expensive ones do, so I guess you get what you pay for sometimes...but as long as you pay attention when you think you are getting close you can still find your max rate.

One other thing I saw on some reviews was that it was too small for men, but I'm 5'11 and nearly 200 lbs and it fits me, in fact I had it on too loose at first, yeah it is tight feeling but it has to be to work.

For someone just starting out this is a great tool and only has 1 button, so there isn't much complicated about it. I would recommend this to anyone looking to start heart rate training, it has been proven to really help build aerobic capacity and strength when done properly.

4 out of 5 stars Never fails to work   January 31, 2008

I own this monitor and it is a great one. I am a Heavyhands trainer, and so I wave my arms around a lot during training. I have tried other monitors, notably the Omron, and they tend to lose contact with the chest strap transmitter unless the watch is held constantly within about a foot of the transmitter. But with my Polar monitor, I'm always swinging my hands above my head and down to the ground, and the heart rate display has never blanked out while exercising. Not once.
The only reason I gave this product just 4 stars is the price listed here. You can find this watch, new in the box, for only $40 at WalMart. I saw one at Sears today, in the clearance bin, for $10.97(!!). I'm going back tomorrow to buy about five of them so I can give them away as presents.
I was lucky to find one for that cheap, but even for $40 this monitor is a steal. Heck, even the former full retail price at Sears, $50, was a good deal.
You can't replace the batteries in these things, which is a drag, but at these prices you can just junk it and buy a new one when it burns out. My last heart rate monitor lasted five years before the batteries burned out.

Easy to read, easy to use, not for elite atheletes who want a lot of info and storing capacity

1 out of 5 stars Waste of money! Does not work!   January 19, 2008

This watch does not work! It did not pick up my heart rate at all the second time using it! I had to send it back for a refund. What a disappointment!!!
