About Mio The story of Mio began in 1999 when it was created by entrepreneur and mother of three, Liz Dickinson. Like many of us, Liz balances family and career, leaving little time for fitness. After several unsuccessful attempts to achieve her fitness goals and shed the pregnancy weight-gain of her third child, Liz turned to a personal trainer for advice. While working with a trainer, Liz realized the key to getting in shape and staying in shape is to practice smart eating habits, monitoring calorie intake, and using a heart rate monitor to ensure that she exercises at the right level. Liz realized there wasn't a product available on the market that would easily help her follow her trainer's advice. Liz didn't have time to read labels and carry a calorie journal in her purse, nor did she have much patience for the uncomfortable chest strap she had to wear to get her heart rate. She knew there had to be a better way, so Liz used her technology and marketing savvy to create Mio, the world's first heart rate monitor to work without a chest strap. And, it didn't stop with just heart rate, as Mio also has a patented calorie management system that offers a straightforward approach to managing your diet. With the help of Mio and a balanced diet, Liz was able to shed those unwanted pounds and gain the benefits that come with improved fitness: more energy, more vitality, and less stress, and help many others do the same with the creation of Mio's products. A good heart rate monitor August 9, 2007 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I actually have the Sport model, not the Sport Select; but I did not see that one listed.
These watches are supposed to be as accurate as an EKG machine, and the company has testimonials to affirm that is true.
The steel back of the watch must be in contact with your arm while two fingers are on the metal buttons next to the display to get a reading. The arm must be relaxed and the fingers should not press too hard. Lick the fingertips before pressing the buttons for a faster, more dependable reading. I bought mine to use while cycling, and it helps me do what I want to do.
A number of things can interfere with getting a reading. See the FAQ's on the MIO web site if you have problems. For example, although my watch is new, I have no idea how long it sat in a warehouse. As a precautionary measure, I plan to install a new battery. The watch has not given a heart rate reading a couple of times and a weak battery can be a cause. If riding a bike on rough road, the vibration transmitted to your arm will keep the watch from giving a reading. If your arm muscles are not very relaxed, you will not get a reading. If I can avoid these two conditions, I can usually get a reading, even while riding.
The chief selling point is no need for a chest strap.
I like the watch. It has helped me modify my exercise program and I am losing weight at a more steady pace since buying the watch.
Update: One day I suddenly could get no heart rate readings. Later in the day I did get readings, but they were in the 200 bpm range and totally false. Through a process of reasoning and experimenting I decided the thin plastic film on the inside of the metal back plate was too thin in some spot and no longer electrically isolated the battery holder from the metal back. I cut a disc of paper the same shape and size as the thin white plastic film. I inserted it between the battery and the metal back. I was careful to allow the coiled spring to make good electrical contact with the metal back. The heart rate monitor works just like it should again.
Also, I did replace the battery, since I learned my Sport is no longer in production and could be a couple of years old already. Heart rate readings come a little faster with the new battery.
