About Elliptical Trainers
Elliptical trainers represent the next wave of advancement in low-impact cardiovascular exercise machines and continue to grow in popularity. By simulating motions experienced through walking, stepping, cycling, and skiing, elliptical machines allow for a smooth and fluid motion while building strength in the arms and legs. Similar to the exercise position for treadmills, elliptical trainers are used by standing in an upright position while holding the handrails of the machine. With elliptical trainers, however, your feet remain in the foot pedals throughout the exercise regimen and circulate in a smooth and seamless motion, resulting in little to no impact on the knees, back, and hips.

Elliptical trainers are compatible for all ages and fitness levels and allow you to select the difficulty level through the incline and intensity settings. Additionally, elliptical trainers allow you to determine the complexity of your workout based on your needs, all while listening to music, watching television, or reading a magazine while exercising in the comfort and safety of your own home.

Although different types of elliptical trainers offer an assortment of features, many of them include an array of challenging programs, forward and reverse directional movement, EKG grip pulse handles, a lightweight portable design with easy fold-up capability, and a monitor displaying calories burned, distance, speed, time, and heart rate. Other types of exercise machines, namely treadmills and bikes, offer excellent cardiovascular exercise and muscular training for the legs in a forward-motion exercise. Elliptical trainers take this to the next level by offering an upper and lower body workout with dual motion, challenging and diverse programs, and a low-impact exercise machine that won't strain sensitive joints.

5 out of 5 stars Best under $1,000!   November 17, 2008
I had no problems at all with my order/delivery of the Schwinn 438 Elliptical Trainer from Amazon. Free delivery saved me $122.00 and was within a week. It took my husband about two hours to put the machine together. It's very quiet and has SO many different programs and difficulty settings. It gives you a great workout, and I love the fact that it keeps track of your progress under your own profile. The one thing that I'd have to say negative about it is that some rust initially fell out of the tracks because the inside of the machine is not painted (can't really blame them there), but this has not affected the use of the machine. I just vacuumed up the little rusty flakes and haven't seen any more since that first day of usage. This is a stable machine that does not rock like the cheaper models, and I would say is the closest you can get to gym-quality without spending over $1,000.

1 out of 5 stars The console keeps breaking   October 28, 2008
Overall this machine is just barely okay... pretty cheap built, but I guess you get what you pay for (But I even bought it when it was a thousand bucks, $300 is a more appropriate price for this thing). Even with very light use (hard to get motivated to get on this thing) twice now the electronics have stopped working. The first time (which it broke just after a week) they mailed me a replacement free of charge but now that the warranty is gone I don't know what will happen. Not sure if it worth paying anything at all to have it fixed. Better to either join a gym or pay more and get something more solid.

2 out of 5 stars I'd love this machine if it weren't so poorly made   October 2, 2008
I bought the Schwinn 438 about two months ago. Half of that time, it's been out of commission due to Nautilus' absolutely atrocious quality assurance. First, the machine shipped missing half the screws and bolts necessary to complete construction. It took the company three weeks to finally send me the small box of parts I needed. Once I was able to build it, I was only able to use it for a few days before it appeared to break. The problem? The instructions forgot to mention that I was supposed to reinforce the two main load-bearing joints with the thick aluminum sheathes that were inexplicably left over once I finished building it. Oops, just a minor detail there. And today's it's back out of commission because the welds supporting the mast have come loose. I bought Schwinn because of the company's reputation for excellence, but my experience with this product has been fraught with the shoddiness I'd expect from some fly-by-night off-brand. Utterly disappointing.

1 out of 5 stars VERY DISAPPOINTED WITH AMAZON   August 1, 2008

I ordered this item on June 11 and it is now August 1st. I have just called in to ask where the item is and customer service has no idea and practically encouraged me to cancel the order and receive a refund. I am very disappointed in Amazon. I was impressed with their Free SuperSaver Shipping option but now I know WHY IT WAS FREE! I have just opted to receive my refund and buy from someone else! Signed, Angry in Texas

5 out of 5 stars Great Elliptical for the Money   July 20, 2008

Purchased this machine from Amazon 2+ years ago after using a Matrix elliptical at the gym and really liking the workout. Was a bit concerned about durability long term, as this is comparably a cheaper piece of equipment. But... have used it about 3 - 4 times/week ever since. Have never had any problems with it! Love the user memory -- just jump on the elliptical, pick your name and go! A great addition to any home gym.
