Amazon.com Product Description Save money on monthly gym fees and get yourself in shape with the compact, comfortable Schwinn 231 recumbent exercise bike. The 231 boasts all the high-quality features of the Schwinn 213, but adds several extras, including a nicer, easier-to-read instrument panel with a three-position angle adjustment, a better cooling fan, a slightly lower pedal height that produces a more comfortable riding position, and an easy step-through frame. And that doesn't even account for all the essentials, which range from 16 resistance levels to handlebars with an integrated heart rate monitor built into the grip. The handiest feature, however, is unquestionably the anatomically designed recumbent seat, which not only offers a dual-position lumbar support for added comfort, but also a padded base that adjusts in the for/aft positions to accommodate a variety of body types and sizes. Specifications: - 16 resistance levels

About Recumbent Exercise Bikes Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out. The term recumbent literally means "lying down." Exercising in a recumbent or reclining position allows the user to have full ergonomic back support, without causing strain on the arms, neck and shoulders, all of which can be common effects of using an upright bicycle. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

Great decision to buy the Schwinn recumbent bike!!! August 18, 2008 After having major back surgery I needed something for both cardio and leg strengthening . I decided on the bike over a treadmill. Amazingly quiet, extremely comfortable for having had back surgery and a good variety of programs that are easy to set up. The display is very easy to read and understand. Liked the large pedals, with the ability to remove the straps, which I prefer to do. Delivery was excellent with free shipping . Set up was easy with tools supplied.
Easy to put together, easy to use & quiet July 28, 2008 I received this bike about 10 days after I ordered it. The 125 lb box was intimidating at first, but I finally opened it and removed the bicycle. I placed a mat underneath of the bike because I have hardwood floors and didn't want to damage them in any way. Then I commenced to putting the bike together. With the exception of one page of directions (putting the seat rail back on the bike--NOTE: Pay attention to how the seat bracket looks _before_ removing it from the rail, because there's no picture of it, and you have to put it back together - this was my biggest stumbling block) and some faulty wire connections (duct tape fixed one problem, but the heart rate monitor has two of the same connection, so I need to call to figure that one out), it was not difficult. I consider myself pretty average when it comes to being handy (my day job is behind a desk), but I had almost no problem following the directions. My back is a little sore from lifting and moving the bike around, but that's only because of how heavy it is. I'm very impressed with how easy it was to put together, and with the fact that Schwinn provided all the tools I needed to do so. It took me under 4 hours to put it together.
As for using the bike- the fan could be more powerful, but it's decent. The controls are easy to use, and the ride is steady and VERY quiet. I can watch tv as I ride with no problem.
I highly recommend this bike.
Damaged July 16, 2008 0 out of 3 found this review helpful
Should have put together sooner. Damaged with flywheel scraping side of encloser. Hope can get fixed for less than bargain price I paid.
Fabulous bike July 4, 2008 I was searching for an exercise bike and tried a few in the local stores, but they all seemed very cheap and unstable. Then there were the stores that had fantastic exercise bikes, but were all above $1200. I decided to search online and quickly came across the Schwinn 231. I'm very glad I came to Amazon and found these reviews. After reading all the reviews, I decided this was the bike for me.
The first glitch was Amazon not passing my phone number to the shipper. Amazon has my number on record, but the shipper never got it. So my bike actually sat for two days in their warehouse before they could get a hold of me. They emailed Amazon who then emailed me and provided their number. It would also have been nice to be sent the shipper's phone number as soon as they knew who the shipper was. Once they had my number they delivered the next day. The shipper was ABF, and even though I was told this would be a curbside delivery only, the driver brought it right into my garage. The side of the box (just above where the computer panel is packed) was torn and punched in. The delivery driver helped me unpack all the parts to make sure nothing was broken (great guy!) and then I signed for it.
I assembled this myself in less than 90 minutes. It's really a piece of cake, the manual is written very well and the bolts and nuts are clearly identified. I wasn't short any parts, and none were left over. The only annoying part of the build was you have to remove the back seat panel after you have installed the seat onto the frame rail, due to the fact that it hides a wiring block that you need a step later. Just a couple minutes of extra work there.
The only thing that could be difficult for one person to do by themselves is when you are attaching the seat frame and rail back onto the bike frame, you have to reconnect a wire and stuff it into the frame, before you can set the whole assembly down. You could just as easily build the bike on its side to this point and then tilt it upright when done.
The only defect in my bike is the fan didn't work, which is very common. I called Nautilus' support line and they placed an order for a replacement part in just a few minutes. They just got a delivery of back ordered fans and I was told they are going into Q&A right now before they will be shipped. My bike didn't suffer from the smelly seat issue that many had, nor do my pedals or the fly wheel make any clunking sounds. The foot straps are easy to install, I don't understand why others had issues with this.
I think the bike rides really nicely. The resistance at level 16 is fantastic. I only wish Schwinn had a way for you to harness that power you generate when pedaling. There is a little bit of frame creaking when in use (but then I have a spare tire), and only the slightest amount of wobble on carpet. The bike is otherwise very stable and very quiet. I wish it was easier to adjust the seat distance (when you have more than one person using it). I like the water bottle holder under the seat. I also wish the support column for the computer angled forward a lot more, and possibly telescoped out to get the panel closer.
I highly recommend this bike based on its quality and appearance. I used the free shipping method and it arrived in 10 days (could have been 8).
Thanks Amazon for a great deal!
two many under warranty repairs June 26, 2008 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
As far as the comfort and feel of this bike, we are very happy. That is, when it is working! I will start with the statement that Schwinn customer support has been very easy to work with. Item 1: The bike came in an undamaged box (wet though, in the middle of a snow storm) which we accepted. After we broke down the box to get it out we discovered that the front shroud was damaged. This was not discovered until we were almost done unpacking it. Schwinn sent us new parts. Wrong parts. They sent us more new parts. Still wrong. On the third try they got it right (sort of). There was a color change and the silver and black color scheme is reversed. That is why we had to change both sides even though one side was damaged. They were a very big job to change because we had to remove the pedals with a wheel puller. Item 2: The blood pressure monitor quit working. They sent us complete new handle bars which contained the wiring. Works fine now. Item 3: The transformer just died so the bike has no power. They are shipping us a new one.
I would like to restate that customer support is very good. The bike is registered so they can look up and see it is under warranty. However, If I had realized that Schwinn is no longer an American Co. and the bike was made in China, I may have shopped around some more. I really feel that we got a lemon since it came damaged and this is our second repair in 6 months.
