Editorial Reviews:

Product Description
This edition combines two of Joseph Pilates published works in one volume. Contrology is the complete coordination of mind, body and spirit, wrote Joseph Pilates. In Return to Life, first published in 1945, Pilates defines the concept of Contrology with specific advice regarding posture, body mechanics, correct breathing, spinal flexibility and physical education. He demonstrates his original 34 mat exercises, which are now basic repertoire in Pilates training. Each exercise is demonstrated by Pilates himself at the age of 60 in a series of photos accompanied by detailed instructions. Your Health, originally published in 1934, explains Joseph Pilates early theories about health and fitness. Its a fascinating look into the mind of the man who revolutionized fitness, and whose teachings form the foundation of a discipline now embraced by fitness enthusiasts, health educators, rehabilitation specialists, and exercise trainers around the world. Black and white, paperback, 158 pages.

5 out of 5 stars Pilates in photos and his own words   April 26, 2008
If you want pictures of Joseph Pilates doing a lot of his basic exercises and if you want a short explanation of his ideas in his own words, then this is worth the price. Nothing about his machine/s however. Just mat pilates.

5 out of 5 stars Real Pilates course   August 8, 2007
I learned my first pilates mat on a specialized gym with a teacher, third in line with Joseph Pilates. Classes were really expensive and I started searching on internet for a video with the original excercises as the ones I learned. I did not have too much luck, until I saw this video and order it. It was the exact same routine that I was taught; so I left the gym and do them at home now. For any pilates course, you should always go to a licensed teacher first because if you don't you might damage your spine. There are certain positions which need help at the beginning and you can't do them on your own. After that, you can buy this DVD with confidence is really good. The purpose of the pilates workout is for flexibility, back problems and posture correction. They are excellent for herniated disk, I have two and after six months practicing pilates the pain was gone for good.

4 out of 5 stars Lays it out for you. (Also, a PC alert in this review.)   May 30, 2007

I have the DVD "Classical Pilates Technique - The Complete Mat Workout Series", which I love. But some of the stuff wasn't totally clear to me, such as when you start breathing in some of the exercises, even though it was touched on--maybe it's just me. So I got this book. When the book is open to an exercise, each exercise has a set of four pictures on the left page and on the right page there are complete instructions. I think it is useful as it is another view of what you are trying to do, so in complements the video I have. If I could only have either the book or the video, I would pick the DVD, but the book is nice to have.

A warning: Pilates, in a reference to the fact that a lot of other fitness teachers at the time were sick or had physical problems, referred to that incongruity as follows: "This is the '[N-word] in the wood pile.'" He used quotes to indicate that it was an expression, which it was at the time. This is on page 113, which is the second book within the book, originally published in 1934. Pilates himself had excellent health and was sure his system would give people excellent health.

5 out of 5 stars Two of Pilates' Original Works   April 12, 2007

This book combines Pilates' first two books about his exercise system. You'll notice a few differences between how Pilates is taught today and how it was originally done.

4 out of 5 stars The orginal writings of Joseph H. Pilates   February 9, 2007

This book is a compilation of two original works by the founder of the Pilates exercise system, Joseph H. Pilates. The first book, Pilates' Return to Life Rhough Contrology ("contrology" was the name that Pilates himself gave to his system) provides an overview of the method, including detailed descriptions of the 34 original mat exercises in the system complete with Pilates himself demonstrating via black and white photos. In the second work, Your Health, Pilates lays out some of the basic principles of contrology; concepts covered in this work include posture, body mechanics, and breathing. Those who have never read any of Pilates' original writings before will note that his passion about his work comes across as a certain smugness and conceit; in both books, he makes extraordinary claims about the benefits of the Pilates method and seems convinced it is the only way to attain true health and fitness.

Those who are familiar with Pilates matwork may also note that Joseph Pilates' own descriptions of the exercises (in Contrology) differ somewhat from how these exercises are usually presented today. For example, when lying prone, he often shows the legs raised only a few inches off the floor, whereas today, it is generally recommended to keep the legs at a 45-degree angle relative to the floor. In addition, Pilates often shows his back in a more extreme curve than what is seen in modern teachings. My guess is that these modifications have been made to the system to be more protective of the spine, especially in absence of working one-on-one with a Pilates instructor.

Although I found that Joseph Pilates' writing style was a bit dry and thus sometimes difficult to slog through, it was still fascinating to read about the technique from the founder himself. This book isn't for everyone, but I would definitely recommend it for those looking to learn more about Pilates directly from the horse's mouth.
